His Artificial Heart Gives Him Insomnia

K brought along her friend A to Thursday Night Pints, D still buying. A owes us the next two nights of drinks when she again appears as she immediately started talking about Obama and the election. No one told me about that rule, she protested. It's understood, said L, it's tradition, I said, you know now, said D, I should have warned you, said K. A is working through her Obama: Can't or Won't? despair, her Can't resisting a Won't she knows will win. L said, when Obama could he didn't, now that he still doesn't want to but has to pretend he does he can't even pretend. I said, and even if he wanted to, not just wanted to appear to want to for rube food, he couldn't now after such determined work to ensure that he couldn't. D said, not that Obama wants to. And what Obama wanted to, I added, he did, ruthlessly, assholishly. Resigned silence. This is why we have the rule, K said to A: it needs to be talked about, but whoever starts it has to pay.

HIS HEART

Caroline Knox

His heart keeps him awake while he's asleep.
He listens to his heart while he falls asleep in bed.
His artificial heart gives him insomnia.
As long as I can hear the sound, I know I'm here.

His heart keeps him alive while he's asleep.
My heart helps me to sleep while I'm alive.
Oh, patient, this Valentine is for you.

I had no choice, I knew that I was dying.
We are trying to survive. We are standing on the shoulders
of the makers of the heart while we lie on our back in bed.
They walk with their hearts on their sleeves and their noses to the grindstone.
He listens to his heart while he falls asleep at night.

Oh, Valentine, this contraption is for you,
device of the sacred, the sacred heart.
It feels heavy to me--it makes a constant whir
which keeps me awake when I'm trying to get to sleep.
It has no heartbeat, only this constant whir.

Fifty-Nine Today

Today may or not be David Thomas' 59th birthday. Years ago I read on a Pere Ubu fan site that March 30, 1953 was Thomas' birthday, but that site disappeared and all that wikipedia said for years was Thomas was born in 1953. Yesterday afternoon, searching the birthday site I use to remind me of Holy Days, I saw Thomas' name. Huh? Went to wikipedia, and Huh? there's June 14 listed as Thomas' birthday. Well, OK w/me, Thomas has one of three permanent spots on my Sillyass Desert Island game, if this new birthday information means that I have to celebrate the same Highest of Holy Day of Egoslavia twice within two and a half months this year, everybody wins! or at least me.

Bus Called Happiness, Wasted, Three Things, Dark, My Friend's a Stooge for the Media Priests, Breath, Non-Alignment Pact, David Thomas and Richard Thompson, Navvy, Slow/Drive, Steve/Phone Home Jonah/Where's the Truth, Two Girls (One Bar)/Babylonian Warehouses, Surfer Girl, Habeus Corpus, My Theory of Spontaneous Similitude, Red Sky, 30 Seconds Over Tokyo, The Crickets in the Flats, The Birds Are Good Ideas, Bicycle, Final Solution, Perfume.

Her Perfume, I Think It's Turpenteen

I once saw it dated March 30 but could never find it again though I celebrated it as such, then just within the past two hours I discover in two different places that tomorrow is a High Holy Day in Egoslavia.

Well, If It's Permitted, Then Let's Regulate Him, Let's Testify Against His Thimble, and Moderate His Gloves Before They Sew an Apron

Throw your spare coins. Yes, serendipitously, this speaks to my hard-wired need of uniforms and consequent zealous evangelizing in mission to said uniform. Shit, I get freaking weepy at professional-grade emotional blackmail by said uniform, every manipulative camera shot, every dynamic of the bed music exactly as you expect it to be, building, faster, slower, faster, faster, till a thrilling orgasm of schmaltz.

Still, WFMU plays great music and makes me happy, so give. Did you notice how yesterday's poem serendipitously evokes this blog's Theme Song 3?

A VAGABOND

James Tate

A vagabond is a newcomer
in a heap of trouble.
He’s an eyeball at a peephole
that should be electrocuted.
He’s a leper in a textile mill
and likely to be beheaded, I mean,
given a liverwurst sandwich
on the break by the brook
where the loaves are sliced.
But he oughtn’t meddle
with the powder puffs on the golf links—
they have their own goats to tame,
dirigibles to situate.
He can act like an imbecile
if the climate is propitious,
a magnate of kidnap
paradising around the oily depot,
or a speck from a distant nebula
wishing to purchase a certain skyscraper ....

Well, if it’s permitted, then
let’s regulate him, let’s testify
against his thimble, and moderate his gloves
before they sew an apron.

The local minister is thinking
of moving to Holland, exchanging
his old ballads for some lingerie.
“Zatso!” says the vagabond.
Homeless, like wheat that tattletales
on the sermon, like wages swigged.
“Zatso, zatso, zatso!” cries the vagabond.
The minister reels under the weight
of his thumbs, the vagabond seems to have
jutted into his kernel, disturbed
his terminal core. Slowly, and with
trifling dignity, the minister removes
from his lapel his last campaign button:
Don’t Mess with Raymond, New Hampshire.

I Hate How Everything Changes, Tree to Failing Term Paper, Chatelaine to Beheaded Plotter, Drug Dealer to Narc

Not laziness, not weariness, not what-the-fuckness, some what I started I haven't finished as I want it, but mostly because all I want for today's monologue is wishing Happy 53rd Birthday to Danny Husk, Buddy Cole, Queen Elizabeth, and Francesca Fiore.

HERACLITEAN

Kim Addonizio

In goes the cafeteria worker in her hairnet.
In goes the philosophy teacher
explaining the theory of eternal
return, and Anton Stadler with his clarinet,
still owing money to Mozart. In
goes Mozart. Everyone flopped into the creel
of the happy fisherman, everyone eaten.
Every river is Lethean,
so why should we care
if it’s not the same river? I hate
how everything changes, tree
to failing term paper, chatelaine
to beheaded plotter, drug dealer to narc.
The heart softening faster than cereal
but then hardening to a relic
which turns into another line
of depressed poetry to recite
to the next eager trainee
anxious to be more than lint.
Going up, you’re also going down, so either
way, as your mother said, Be nice.
When she went in, she was very thin.
Earth, air, fire, water, mother.
Fish pulse slowly under the river ice.

My Friend Michael and I Are Walking Home Arguing About the Movie. He Says That He Believes a Person Can Love Someone and Still Be Able to Murder Him

Seven times in the past three days, five at a BBQ Friday night which prompted my sloppy and retaliatory shivving of Garry Wills Sunday morning, two in response to my retaliatory shivving of Garry Wills, I've been assailed for my constant assaults on Obama and his liberal supporters. To oppose Barack Obama is to endorse the motherfucker running against him, five of seven said directly. Well, fuck that and all, but I apologize if my zealous evangelizing of my apostasies sometimes feels like relentless badgering. I know I'm prone to zealotry. Some disagree profoundly and probably permanently with me on the definition and scope of the clusterfuck, the causes, the diagnosis, the RX of possible corrections, the prognosis. All's good, disagreement will continue. It doesn't follow that if someone disagrees with me I necessarily think that person foolish and of bad faith though I may think that person wrong. My apologies if my motherfuckering sometimes suggests otherwise, I can see how it might, I hate when it's done to me. There are reasons my new tablet is washed full of rules on rules on rules on rules.

AFTER THE MOVIE

Marie Howe

My friend Michael and I are walking home arguing about the movie.
He says that he believes a person can love someone
and still be able to murder that person.

I say, No, that's not love. That's attachment.
Michael says, No, that's love. You can love someone, then come to a day

when you're forced to think "it's him or me"
think "me" and kill him.

I say, Then it's not love anymore.
Michael says, It was love up to then though.

I say, Maybe we mean different things by the same word.
Michael says, Humans are complicated: love can exist even in the
     murderous heart.

I say that what he might mean by love is desire.
Love is not a feeling, I say. And Michael says, Then what is it?

We're walking along West 16th Street—a clear unclouded night—and I hear my voice
repeating what I used to say to my husband: Love is action, I used to say
     to him.

Simone Weil says that when you really love you are able to look at
someone you want to eat and not eat them.

Janis Joplin says, take another little piece of my heart now baby.

Meister Eckhardt says that as long as we love images we are doomed to
     live in purgatory.

Michael and I stand on the corner of 6th Avenue saying goodnight.
I can't drink enough of the tangerine spritzer I've just bought—

again and again I bring the cold can to my mouth and suck the stuff from
the hole the flip top made.

What are you doing tomorrow? Michael says.
But what I think he's saying is "You are too strict. You are
     a nun."

Then I think, Do I love Michael enough to allow him to think these things
of me even if he's not thinking them?

Above Manhattan, the moon wanes, and the sky turns clearer and colder.
Although the days, after the solstice, have started to lengthen,

we both know the winter has only begun.

When You See This Black Car Do Not Think It Is a SYMBOL FOR SOMETHING

Read this by terminal professional liberal and hard-wired fool Garry Wills. Tell me, other than the third sentence of the first paragraph in which he is named and portrayed as heroic, whose name goes unmentioned in Wills diagnosis of the clusterfuck, Wills' naming the problem's vectors. Hint! Here's Will on the hero's party:

Democratic candidates are forced to mimic the obsessive need to raise funds, in a contest where they are heavily outgunned.

Forced! the brave but tortured lambs against their noble and natural liberal instincts towards good! The above and below videos came immediately to mind, they are Co-Theme Songs for When I C/Ped the Code for These YouTube into Fucking Blooger's (Old, Fuck the New Blogger!) Create Post Page at 20:37 EDT June 9, 2012:

HOMAGE TO SHARON STONE

Lynn Emanuel

It's early morning. This is the "before,"
the world hanging around in its wrapper,
blowzy, frumpy, doing nothing: my
neighbors, hitching themselves to the roles
of the unhappily married, trundle their three
mastiffs down the street. I am writing this
book of poems. My name is Lynn Emanuel.
I am wearing a bathrobe and curlers; from
my lips, a Marlboro drips ash on the text.
It is the third of September nineteen**.
And as I am writing this in my trifocals
and slippers, across the street, Sharon Stone,
her head swollen with curlers, her mouth
red and narrow as a dancing slipper,
is rushed into a black limo. And because
these limos snake up and down my street,
this book will be full of sleek cars nosing
through the shadowy ocean of these words.
Every morning, Sharon Stone, her head
in a helmet of hairdo, wearing a visor
of sunglasses, is engulfed by a limo
the size of a Pullman, and whole fleets
of these wind their way up and down
the street, day after day, giving to the street
(Liberty Avenue in Pittsburgh, PA)
and the book I am writing, an aspect
that is both glamorous and funereal.
My name is Lynn Emanuel, and in this
book I play the part of someone writing
a book, and I take the role seriously,
just as Sharon Stone takes seriously
the role of the diva. I watch the dark
cars disappear her and in my poem
another Pontiac erupts like a big animal
at the cool trough of a shady curb. So,
when you see this black car, do not think
it is a Symbol For Something. It is just
Sharon Stone driving past the house
of Lynn Emanuel who is, at the time,
trying to write a book of poems.

Or you could think of the black car as
Lynn Emanuel, because, really, as an author,
I have always wanted to be a car, even
though most of the time I have to be
the "I," or the woman hanging wash;
I am a woman, one minute, then I am a man,
I am a carnival of Lynn Emanuels:
Lynn in the red dress; Lynn sulking
behind the big nose of my erection;
then I am the train pulling into the station
when what I would really love to be is
Gertrude Stein spying on Sharon Stone
at six in the morning. But enough about
that, back to the interior decorating:
On the page, the town looks bald
and dim so I turn up the amps on
the radioactive glances of bad boys.
In a kitchen, I stack pans sleek with
grease, and on a counter there is a roast
beef red as a face in a tantrum. Amid all
this bland strangeness is Sharon Stone,
who, like an engraved invitation, is asking
me, Won't you, too, play a role? I do not
choose the black limo rolling down the street
with the golden stare of my limo headlights
bringing with me the sun, the moon, and
Sharon Stone. It is nearly dawn; the sun
is a fox chewing her foot from the trap;
every bite is a wound and every wound
is a red window, a red door, a red road.
My name is Lynn Emanuel. I am the writer
trying to unwrite the world that is all around her.

Since I've Been Incinerated I've Oft Returned to This Thought, That All Things Loved Are Pursued and Never Caught

Here's The Spinanes I promised, prompted by news of a new Rebecca Gates album, her first in eleven years. Also too, illuminate, eliminate, elucidate, eradicate, investigate, inoculate, interrogate, adjudicate, adulterate, bicarbonate, carbohydrate, assimilate, disintegrate, corroborate, disintegrate, inseminate, deactivate, humiliate, incarcerate, irradiate, accentuate, infatuate, denominate, incinerate, prevaricate, ejaculate, articulate, pontificate, gesticulate, reanimate, eviscerate, evaluate, anticipate, expostulate, emasculate, exterminate, effectuate, extenuate, immaculate, inviolate, disaggregate, disintubate, pontificate, emancipate, attenuate, extrapolate, interpolate, disseminate, regurgitate, exasperate, expatriate. This isn't actually the project in mind, but for all the responses, I appreciate it. More please.

ASH ODE

Dean Young

When I saw you ahead I ran two blocks
shouting your name then realizing it wasn’t
you but some alarmed pretender, I went on
running, shouting now into the sky,
continuing your fame and luster. Since I've
been incinerated, I've oft returned to this thought,
that all things loved are pursued and never caught,
even as you slept beside me you were flying off.
At least what's never had can’t be lost, the sieve
of self stuck with just some larger chunks, jawbone,
wedding ring, a single repeated dream,
a lullaby in every elegy, descriptions
of the sea written in the desert, your broken
umbrella, me claiming I could fix it.

Yesterday's Paper Headlines Approach Rain Gutter Teasing Rusty Cat Sneezing

Holyfuck! just saw this, must-post-immediately: What you can buy me for my birthday. Just kidding, I'll buy it long before my birthday gets here. Captain Beefheart is on the short list for one of the two rotating spots in my Sillyass Desert Island game. Love love love.

It's That Etcetera

It's been gorgeous since last Friday's thunderstorms, as good as it gets in DC, Thursday Night Pints sitting outside, the tables surprisingly empty, D buying rounds as is still his debt. There was no such bet last night and no one brought up the particular motherfucker though the general clusterfuck was acknowledged, we're all fucked, et al, tropes of why and how much condensed to birdsong, yadda-yadda, yadda-yadda. Then Hilltop-Hilltop, weather-weather, family-family, keep-keep, seeya-seeya. Next week-next week.

[BIRDSONG, FACE IT, SOME MALE MACHINE]

Marianne Boruch

Birdsong, face it, some male machine
gone addled—repeat, repeat—the damage
keeps doing, the world ending then starting,
the first word the last, etc. It's that

etcetera. How to love. Is a wire
just loose? Build an ear for that. Fewer, they say.
So many fewer, by far. He's showing off
to call her back. Or claiming the tree.

Or a complaint—the food around here,
the ants, the moths, the berries. She's making
the nest, or both are. In feathers, in hair or twigs,
in rootlets and tin foil. Shiny bits seen

from a distance, a mistake. But fate
has reasons to dress up. Stupid
and dazzling have a place, a place, a place
though never. She can't sing it.

He Wanted to Get into the Club, the Club He Was Clubbed Outside of

That's my and SeatSix's home course, Seneca Creek State Park in Gaithersburg MD. Those golfers are Premiership, I'm not even Conference South. SeatSix, Dr Z, and I played 27 this past Sunday afternoon, all throwing north of 100. Dr Z said, we should just consider, when pins are all in C or D, par 4 per hole, not to make us feel better but to make the in-your-head math easier: since four is the most likely score for chumps like us, keeping track of deviations from four is less finger-counting than deviations from three, which is traditional par in disc regardless of tee played or pin placement.

New tablet rules is/are new tablet rules as I detail how I fill a new tablet with page after bleeded into/out of new pieces on new rules on how I kill old rules. No matter how we change the scoring the winner and losers remain the same though both the differential between up and down grows wider as what we define as moral victory slides relatively. New problems rush to fill the vacuum of deleted fixed rules. The project will appear in full here and partially here. I mean, verily, fuck it. As always, fine metaphors abound.

HUSTLERS WITH BAD TIME

D.A. Powell

That pip in the pear is a blackbird. Tussle on the grass a grackle.

     It is officially spring. Watch:

Some kids pulling up BURIED WATER PIPE flags. And next to

them the little violets. Rain violets. The flags are blue.

The sycamores are just greening. "The world in fact is just,"

Chaos said. And we believed him, who called himself

the most difficult thing he could think of. He wanted to get into

the club. The club he was clubbed outside of.

Later, it'll matter that there's no marker. Before he was Chaos,

Robin he was, because he stole. Was blank before.

A bronze angel thoughtfully placed for all who grieve a child.

Of course a child. What else might you have lost.

United 1, Chester 2

See if you can see us between seconds eighteen and twenty-three. There's a good story re: the flare, I'm hoping this guy posts it (UPDATE! Shazam!), he was most exercised by the Park Police response, so loudly in fact some Richie Cunningham-looking cop came over and gave him a "you talking to me" piece of bullshit. After seeing the cops rifle through unattended jackets looking for more flares and other evidence he declared, 4th Amendment my ass, motherfucking police state, to which I said, Black helicopters. Good times, quadrupled by quadruple by Planet's presence. One of dozens of best nights of my life.

As we were walking to the cars after the game I was raging, here, let St Benny of Olsen explain why:

We’ve been asking for this loss. We’ve got to realize that’s not a good enough performance. Too many guys were on their own page. We were cute all over the field. We thought it was going to be enough to step out here and beat a team because they’re a little down on their luck. Maybe it’s a good thing because this really does show us we’re not as good as we think we are. All of the little things that got us success up to this point, we forgot about tonight. There were signs we were forgetting about that over the last couple games and we’ve been squeaking by. Tonight we didn’t squeak by.

United was outworked, out hustled, won less than a third of 50-50s, looked shockingly unfit, played lazy, nonchalant, sloppy, disinterested. Bad touches, bad passes. Brandon McDonald and Emiliano Dudar were both walking clusterfucks in central defense, Robbie Russell at right back not a clusterfuck but a motherfucking grandpa, so old, so slow. If United does make changes during the window and those changes don't address central defense (and please, Ba'al, not washed-up ex-gods from New Zealand) then Kasper Payne needn't bother making any changes at all. And speaking of window, this was a game for the two Balkan DPs to demonstrate why the $$$ and fwwt - neither played poorly, neither played well. But holyfuck, is Salihi slow and his touch heavy, and holyfuck, Boskovic flunked the audition, and holyfuck, yes United is this DeRossario dependent, and if/when he's damaged long term rather than just away temporarily on stupidass Canadian national team duty, United is dead in the water.

I've got more video, photos, won't be able to download/upload the rest until tonight, will post, or not - the stanchion porn requirement for Germantown games has been met. Have this too:

So Is Your Judgment Shown Presumptuous, False, Quite Vain, Merely Your Own Sadness for Failed Ambition Set Outside, Made a Philosophy of, Prinked, Beautified in Noble Dress and into the World Sent Out to Run with the Ill It Most Pretends to Rout

Psychedelic Furs Dumb Waiters by Celtiemama

Hey! Did you know Washington DC has a professional soccer team? It's true! and they play a US Cup 4th round game in Germantown tonight against the Chester Nowaks and here's what St Benny of Olsen says:

Both teams will play as good of a lineup as they think they have. That’s exciting. It’s exciting for the people who come out and watch in Germantown, where they are right on top of you.

Also too, from the same Goff article:

United finished training Monday by practicing penalty kicks (they struck a few crossbars/posts) -- the deciding factor if the clubs are level through 120 minutes. “Hopefully it doesn’t come down to that, hopefully we can do the job before that, but we’re capable,” Olsen said. Last year, in an Open Cup qualifier against the Union at SoccerPlex, Hamid made a critical save during the 4-2 shootout victory.

Planet's coming (so that guarantees 120 minutes then PKs), square pizza at this guy's house first, SeatSix will meet us at SoccerPlex, so woot, plus simply the best soccer experience, year after year, I've ever.

Also too, why would Your Fucking Washington Post use that photo for a story about the growing potential I might need to actually Fuck-Me-Jig? When you read the story, do you have any doubt that if I do Fuck-Me-Jig it will be in front of my seat in an end zone?

Also too, Richard Butler is fifty-six today:

Psychedelic Furs - Run and Run by fery1

Yes, blegweary. Hear how I bitch about the death of LOUD SIDE! before the birth of LOUD SIDE!s demise? I stand by my statement that Friday's jobs statement jarred the needle out of soundtrack into predictable grooves, no more so than here of course. I know a joint where folks in comments are measuring their dicksizes on their competing theories on evolution and education against a sardonic poetic trope, another where folks in comments are measuring their dicksizes on their competing theories of motherfucking objects, Badiou if you do. Standard acknowledgments of my full and contributive complicity apply, see another Furs song for details.

Psychedelic Furs All That Money Wants by Celtiemama

DO NOT!

Stevie Smith

Do not despair of man, and do not scold him,
Who are you that you should so lightly hold him?
Are you not also a man, and in your heart
Are there not warlike thoughts and fear and smart?
Are you not also afraid and in fear cruel,
Do you not think of yourself as usual,
Faint for ambition, desire to be loved,
Prick at a virtuous thought by beauty moved?
You love your wife, you hold your children dear,
Then say not that Man is vile, but say they are.
But they are not. So is your judgement shown
Presumptuous, false, quite vain, merely your own
Sadness for failed ambition set outside,
Made a philosophy of, prinked, beautified
In noble dress and into the world sent out
To run with the ill it most pretends to rout.
Oh know your own heart, that heart's not wholly evil,
And from the particular judge the general,
If judge you must, but with compassion see life,
Or else, of yourself despairing, flee strife.

Can You Tell Me Where My Country Lies Cried the Uniform to His True Love's Eyes

Worksucked, blegweary, so only a song, this, which starts playing in my head every time I read of or hear of this. Here's the whole album.

& if that's not enough (he says to himself in the voice of a black-and-white actor whose name is a moth that keeps avoiding the tip of his flaming tongue) to bring you home, well, there it is again, already exhausted by your efforts to make it comfortable enough to stay

Had conversations with three good workish colleagues and two email yaps with buddies, lifelong Democrats all and devout -.06%ers still, who each for the first time expressed to me genuine shock and fear Obama might actually lose to Romney. I still offer 4-1 pints on Obama's victory, there's three months of daily shitstorms to go before the conventions and Labor Day and the true beginning of the shittiness, plus he's running against a gaffe machine made out of a cardboard box, plus he can move the country further to the right by 2016 than Romney ever could, which Corporate is more than aware. My reassurances didn't assuage. The jobs news of yesterday morning (and please remember the numbers were cooked, as all administrations cook numbers, to be the rosiest possible without stinking of tilt) (made Obama's cockswording - and all he has is his Muslim-killing cred, the sole issue trending up in his campaign's internal polling - seem even more puny, cowardly, craven) made five obamapostles (and numerous bloogers and pundits) squirm to a revealed possibility the motherfucker just might lose and, most interestingly, each entertained the possibility the motherfucker is in fact a lame motherfucker.

JUST ANOTHER PARADIGM SHIFT

Paul Grant

Just a shadow. Hardly that. But audible.
Coming out of the woods, whispering
Happily Ever After.
Even in that light—
stars with the skeletons of animals
and old friends—
visible
to the eye behind the one always
left open on the east side of the house,
downhill. Where the coffee trees
and hemp and the graves of old dogs lie,
buried themselves in leaves and left
to the sputtering wind of memory.

& if that's not enough (he says
to himself in the voice of a black-and-white
actor whose name is a moth that keeps
avoiding the tip of his flaming tongue)
to bring you home, well, there
it is again,
already exhausted
by your efforts to make it
comfortable
enough to stay. Impatient,
already headed
back down into the woods, whispering
Once Upon A Time . . .

The Spurious Pours Forth as Fish and Circuses

I would have thought, said L at Thursday Night Pints, that the Kids in the Hall Fine Ham Abounds would be the most posted video at BLCKDGRD, responding to my claim yesterday that The Guy Under the Seats, Episode 9, Roosevelt: A One-Man Show is the most posted. I said, I'm sure the KITH is the most linked to, though I very infrequently post it. I was then asked multiple questions about the blooger, why this, where that, what next, and I wallowed in the bleggalgazing, thanks all! we'll see where it ends, but yes, thanks for the Kind. Did you see Thiessen's column, asked D as I sat down after buying a round, his laughing at liberal hypocrisy over Obama's war crimes? D, said K, you buy rounds the next two nights, we'd dared each other walking in, whoever first brought up motherfucking Obama bought rounds the next two Thursday Night Pints. Most profitable half hour of bleggalgazing, on multiple levels, ever.

We Want, and If We Don't Then That's What We Want

Here's Scott Norton, who I link to frequently, on the New York Times piece on Obama the Executioner. While I don't always agree with Norton's conclusions I find him more reliably fair than the majority of writers who work for the old professional progressive warhorses. Please pardon the long extract:

The article also tackles the underpinnings of the CIA’s claims that there have been no, or at least very few, civilian deaths owing to drone strikes recently: “Mr. Obama embraced a disputed method for counting civilian casualties. . . . It in effect counts all military-age males in a strike zone as combatants, according to several administration officials, unless there is explicit intelligence posthumously proving them innocent.” We learn that this approach has been controversial within the administration, with some advisers noting that it seems close to a conclusive presumption of guilt.

This is a very important disclosure. On one hand, it clarifies the basis for the CIA’s no-collateral-damage claim. On the other, it puts the drone program on very tenuous grounds under the laws of war. The U.S. military in Iraq, for instance, has previously disciplined officers who issued rules of engagement authorizing the targeting of all military-age males. A person cannot be presumed to be a terrorist simply because he is male, of military age, and happens to be in the same village as some terrorists—he must be engaged in conduct that makes him a combatant. Applied to targeting, this presumption raises serious war-crime issues. As the Times reports, the administration is currently limiting its use to the counting of persons unintentionally killed when a legitimate target has been struck, which theoretically leads only to false information about the number of innocent civilians killed. But the distinction isn’t actually quite so clear-cut: in deciding on a strike, an estimate of collateral damage has to be included. And if all able males are deemed legitimate targets, that process is being seriously distorted.

The Times piece also considers the question of tactics versus strategy. Much of the controversy surrounding drones has swirled around the decision to target individuals, such as Anwar al-Awlaki, who have gained notoriety, and around the government’s willingness to aggressively deploy drones as a tool in the first place. Less discussed have been the broader consequences of drone assassinations:
[T]he strikes that have eviscerated Al Qaeda—just since April, there have been 14 in Yemen, and 6 in Pakistan—have also tested both men’s commitment to the principles they have repeatedly said are necessary to defeat the enemy in the long term. Drones have replaced Guantánamo as the recruiting tool of choice for militants; in his 2010 guilty plea, Faisal Shahzad, who had tried to set off a car bomb in Times Square, justified targeting civilians by telling the judge, “When the drones hit, they don’t see children.”
Dennis C. Blair, director of national intelligence until he was fired in May 2010, said that discussions inside the White House of long-term strategy against Al Qaeda were sidelined by the intense focus on strikes. “The steady refrain in the White House was, ‘This is the only game in town’—reminded me of body counts in Vietnam,” said Mr. Blair, a retired admiral who began his Navy service during that war.
Blair is correct to stress long-term strategy, and it’s a shame that the Times piece fails to develop his point further. Admiral Blair isn’t the only person raising these questions—so, too, is the U.S. ambassador to Pakistan, Cameron P. Munter, who is mentioned in the piece as having complained that “he didn’t realize his main job was to kill people,” and has spoken out elsewhere about the CIA’s dominance in U.S.–Pakistani relations. The current meltdown in U.S. relations with Pakistan—long considered a vital American ally in the region—is directly related to the drone campaign. The White House, focused as it is on kill data from each strike, doesn’t seem to be paying much attention to the effect of heavy drone use on American relations with states in the region, nor to the broader dynamics of American operations against terrorist groups. Is a drone campaign that eliminates Al Qaeda but turns Pakistan, the nation with the world’s fastest-growing nuclear arsenal, into a bitter enemy really a success story?

OK? Clear? Here's Horton's concluding paragraph, the paragraph immediately below the above paragraph:

With the Times account, more important details about the Obama drone program have fallen into place. The disclosures will offer solace to Obama supporters who have qualms about the program, since the administration is shown scrutinizing individual targets and avoiding strikes that would affect innocent women and children. On the other hand, the drone operators continue to they make lethal misjudgments, and the government’s case for secrecy with the program looks more dubious than ever.

Asked honestly: what the fuck? Rimshot for obamapologists but rimshots for everyone, thanks for playing? And it's the smartest piece on the block? So fucked.

PHOTOGRAPHS OF THE INTERIORS OF DICTATORS' HOUSES

Albert Goldbarth

It's as if every demon from hell with aspirations
toward interior design flew overhead and indiscriminately
spouted gouts of molten gold, that cooled down
into swan-shape spigots, doorknobs, pen-and-inkwell sets.
A chandelier the size of a planetarium dome
is gold, and the commodes. The handrails
heading to the wine cellar and the shelving for the DVDs
and the base for the five stuffed tigers posed in a fighting phalanx:
gold, as is the samovar and the overripe harp
and the framework for the crocodile-hide ottoman and settee.
The full-size cinema theater accommodating an audience
of hundreds for the screening of home (or possibly
high-end fuck flick) videos: starred in gold
from vaulted ceiling to clawfoot legs on the seating.
Of course the scepter is gold, but the horns
on the mounted stag heads: do they need to be gilded?
Yes. And the olive fork and the French maid's row of dainty buttons
and the smokestack on the miniature train
that delivers golden trays of dessert from the kitchen
to a dining hall about the size of a zip code,
and the snooker table's sheathing, and the hat rack,
and those hooziewhatsit things in which you slip your feet
on the water skis, and the secret lever
that opens the door to the secret emergency bunker.
Smug and snarky as we are, in our sophisticated
and subtler, non-tyrannical tastes, it's still
unsettling to realize these photographs are also full
of the childrens' pictures set on a desk,
the wife's diploma proudly on a wall, the common
plastic container of aspirin, and the bassinette
with the scroll of linen shade at the ready
in case the sun is too powerful: reminders of how
a graduated continuum connects these überoperatically
fat interior lives to our own. We all desire
"more" and "better," Melville adds that final "e"
to the family name, and Faulkner adds the "u," in quest
of a signified gentility. My friend Damien
(fake name) won A Certain Literary Award, and
at the stellar after-ceremony party, in the swank hotel's
swank atrium, he found a leggy literary groupie
noshing caviar under a swankily lush mimosa,
and in under an hour his own swank room could boast
the golden statuette, the evening's loveliest woman, and
the silver serving platter of five-star caviar,
and if you think this story's moral lesson is
that satiation is ever attained, you don't understand
the protoknowledge we're born with, coded into our cells:
soon soon soon enough we die. Even before we've seen
the breast, we're crying to the world that we want;
and the world doles out its milkiness in doses. We
want, we want, we want, and if we don't then
that's what we want; abstemiousness is only
hunger translated into another language. Yes
there's pain and heartsore rue and suffering, but
there's no such thing as "anti-pleasure": it's pleasure
that the anchorite takes in his bleak cave
and Thoreau in his bean rows and cabin. For Thoreau,
the Zen is: wanting less is wanting more.
Of less. At 3 a.m. Marlene (fake name) and Damien
drunkenly sauntered into and out of the atrium,
then back to his room: he wanted the mimosa too,
and there it stood until checkout at noon, a treenapped testimony
to the notion that we will if we can, as evidenced in even
my normally modest, self-effacing friend. If we can,
the archeological record tells us, we'll continue wanting
opulently even in the afterlife: the grave goods
of pharaohs are just as gold as the headrests
and quivers and necklace pendants they used every day
on this side of the divide, the food containers
of Chinese emperors are ready for heavenly meals
that the carved obsidian dragons on the great jade lids
will faithfully guard forever. My own
innate definition of "gratification" is right there
in its modifier "immediate," and once or twice
I've hurt somebody in filling my maw. I've walked
—the normally modest, self-effacing me—below a sky
of stars I lusted after as surely as any despot
contemplating his treasury. The slice of American cheese
on the drive-thru-window burger is also gold,
bathetically gold,
and I go where my hunger dictates.
