Ningland 1, United 2
Josh Wolff? Josh Wolff? I emailed in derision, but here's the thing: United's need to substitute in a Josh Wolff type striker, who can hold the ball with his back to the goal then make the key pass that sets up a runner (which, so far, neither Salihi or Santos can), which was the offense Ben Olsen played in and is the offense he seems determined to coach, means the team needs a better Josh Wolff for the simple fact he's not the Josh Wolff he once was. I keep saying put DeRossario there, but here's the thing: DeRossario's not a ten but he's the best ten they have. Anyone not think the decision on Boskovic has been made? He either can't play or United's still not sure and won't risk any more money or Boskovic has made it into Benny's Doghouse of Work Rate and will never get the chance to see if he can play or all of the above but number three most. Ding. July 15 is three months from today, injuries may force United to use Boskovic and who knows, but I'm guessing we won't know who United's second half of the season ten and/or better withdrawn forward is until after the summer transfer window.
Out of Benny's Doghouse of Work Rate, Cruz and Santos, here's Benny's game plan: both are dirty, both have exceptional work rates, so have each outwork and whenever possible cheap shot the defenders in their zone until they're softened and slowed and then Benny introduces the players who are better at offense but won't play defense. This is not a complaint. I am curious what Benny had planned with the third substitute before Jakovic's injury forced a Korb. Was that Branko's? Najar's?
Three road points ahead of a run of home games, starting this Wednesday against expansion Montreal and a marquee game (as much as MLS can have a marquee game) next Sunday vs Metros. I feel a need to complain more (and thank you, Ningland defender Stephen McCarthy, the only man in the universe who didn't know Pontius was going to go right) but a bigger need to squash that urge and enjoy the three points, so OK. Here's a more positive than me Fullback, a happier than me Martin, and here's Goff's match report. More later if, but I doubt there's any more.

why not merely the despaired of occasion of wordshed
Imagination dead imagine. I've thought hard why I resist Beckett when I love everything I read (I've watched the WfG I posted yesterday three times), it's dawned on me I'm so prone to be a mimic - I can tell in my writing if I've been reading Barth or Elkin or Pynchon or Ishiguro, I can tell in my thinking who I've been reading - I know how my mind works, I'm so prone to be a mimic I'm frightened of immersing in Beckett. Here's a sillyass Star Trek allusion - Tam Elbrun and Tin Man.

the hours after you are gone are so leaden
they will always start dragging too soon
the grapples clawing blindly the bed of want
bringing up the bones the old loves
sockets filled once with eyes like yours
all always is it better too soon than never
the black want splashing their faces
saying again nine days never floated the loved
nor nine months

- Stirrings still.
- I've evolved: once I would have accused Hilary Rosen of deliberately provoking a shitstorm on the orders of Corporate - Dem Division to divert attention from motherfucking Obama betraying for the umpteenth-thousandth time one of his core liberal constituencies, and while it's true there's been little fury from the left beyond the gay, lesbian, transgender communities, it'd be silly to think Rosen got a phone call from Barack who said, say something nasty about Ann Romney, there's a good lackey.
- Will this cause a minor shitstorm or be dismissed as the tripe it is?
- Occupy as a political form?
- Battle for the soul of Occupy?
- How Occupy coopted MoveOn?
- 99% Spring is a fraud? Inevitably, but I hadn't heard of the 99% Spring until five minutes ago.
- There's still a Green Party?
- Did you know Washington DC has a professional soccer team? It's true, they're playing in Ningland at 4pm, email and/or twitter along if you like.
- It's interesting good and interesting bad that Ishiguro didn't sing to me this time like he has in the past.
- Looking for the Endgame below, found this Endgame.

He Rushed to Check the Spot Where He Buried the Hamster in the Plastic Tub He Used as a Bed in Wantage
Yay, Hamster! Wouldn't want him to miss the Lampchop show Monday night. Also too, this advice from a British vet:
Hamsters can go into a hibernation state if temperatures drop below 50 degrees. You need to warm them up to bring them back to life.
But it can be hard to tell if a Hamster is dead or in hibernation without a stethoscope - their hearts are very tiny and the beat is very low.
If you have any doubts about whether your hamster is dead, take it to the vet. Sometimes you find that they wake up back up in the car on the way.
Also too, New Order's "Elegia," the full 18 minute version, is being rereleased, which, in conjunction with the above, earns this post a My Favorite Post Ever tag.

I Used to Lie with an Ear to the Line for That Way, They Said, There Should Come a Sound Escaping Ahead, and Iron Tune of Flange and Piston Pitched Along the Ground, but I Never Heard That
I just tweeted about the shitstorm while waiting for you, I said as we were sitting down to Thursday Night Pints and the shitstorm was quickly mentioned. I tweeted, I continued, I'm curious, I wonder how much immediate and long-term money and influence Hilary Rosen, in the penthouse boardrooms of Corporate - Dem Division, just flushed in that thirty-second soundbite. This is the stupidest shitstorm yet, said K. Till tomorrow, said L. I said, I have to imagine Rosen will be muzzled and dog-housed once her Ozzie Guillen self-flaying is complete, at least two weeks or six more shitstorms, whichever comes first. Imagine, said K, think how pissed-off Obama's camp must be, how pissed off he is, she fucked-up Obama's winning game-plan now no matter how inconsequential and temporary it probably turns out to be. L said, I'd guess Rosen loses the time and money it takes Obama's camp to gain back the advantage they had before Rosen opened her mouth, time and money permanently lost. My guess, I said, is she'll still be more wildly wealthy and influential than she is right now after opening her mouth last night but she'll never be as wealthy and influential as she might have been before opening her mouth last night. Has anyone responded to your tweet, K asked. It took me two minutes to set the new iPhone up for wifi in the bar, everyone's told me, always use wifi instead of 3G whenever possible (or is it always use 3G before wifi?), I had to go up to the bartender to get the password, was told on my way to the bar to get the password that I might as well buy a round while I was up there anyway, so when I looked at twitter five minutes after the question and more than an hour after the tweet the answer was no.
GLANMORE SONNETS IV
Seamus Heaney
I used to lie with an ear to the line
For that way, they said, there should come a sound
Escaping ahead, an iron tune
Of flange and piston pitched along the ground,
But I never heard that. Always, instead,
Struck couplings and shuntings two miles away
Lifted over the woods. The head
Of a horse swirled back from a gate, a grey
Turnover of haunch and mane, and I’d look
Up to the cutting where she’d soon appear.
Two fields back, in the house, small ripples shook
Silently across our drinking water
(As they are shaking now across my heart)
And vanished into where they seemed to start.
- My avatar's nemesis was born 89 years ago today.
- The material existence of ideology.
- Metropolitan resistance.
- BTW, anyone complaining that the Romney campaign and Corporate - GOP Division is running with the Rosen story as hard and dishonorably as they possibly can should remember (a) Romney's playing POTUS 12 for fuck's sake and (b) remember how the Democrats deliberately and gleefully used (and will use future) Romney quotes taken out of context and (c) STFU.
- UPDATE! This: Political scientist Tom Ferguson has noted that there are always two elections at work concurrently in America, a public election that voters see, and a hidden election where funders operate in shifting coalitions to pull the levers of power. In this case, it’s the very triviality that is on display that speaks to what is going. Rosen, a corporate lobbyist who represents or has represented copyright interests, for-profit colleges, and BP, is fighting with David Axelrod, who has made money from the nuclear industry, and Anna Romney, who rides expensive horses bought by her husband’s private equity millions. This is staged kabuki between powerful millionaires, none of whom can credibly speak from recent experience on economic struggles.
- UPDATE! The gist of my question about what Rosen's comments may have cost her.
- For example.
- Motherfucking Obama.
- Even Kos-writers have the occasional obamapostasy.
- War on women, war on everybody.
- On lesser-evilism.
- On the oh-so-polite middle-class asshole.
- Things you might have missed.
- Lowell George was born 67 years ago today.
- UPDATE! Zen's got a couple of song and stuff.

Thirty-Four Years Ago Today
Without question one of the five best nights of my life for multiple and wonderful reasons, pre-show, show, and shazam! post-show.
Here is where I was going to engage the daily clusterfuck, but fuck it. Here's a show I was at in 83 at Merriwether:

The Wonder of Their Singing, Its Elusive Blend of Man and Camel, Seemed and Ideal Image for All Uncommon Couples
When Rick Santorum quit yesterday behind the cover of his sick child there were thirty weeks until the election. 210 days, 5040 hours, 302,400 minutes, 18,144,000 seconds. Like it was not going to be Romney even before the Rick Perry Experience pwooted out, when none of the fat white patriarchal knights of Villager imagination appeared despite consensus across the American political spectrum that Romney is a repulsively transparent and perfect avatar of the avatar of a repulsively transparent and self-serving American presidential candidate. I have not talked to anyone - and I work at Hilltop for fuck's sake, I've friends, acquaitances, and colleagues far to the right of me (Hi! Uncle!) - declare either respect or admiration for Romney even as he or she says Romney gets their vote as opposition to the repulsively transparent and perfect avatar of the avatar of a repulsively transparent and self-serving American presidential candidate who already has the job. Today there are 209 days, 5016 hours, 300,960 minutes, 18,057,600 seconds until the general election for us to argue the moral validity of .06% less-shittiness in the scheme of our complicities. Hot damn and meh.
MAN AND CAMEL
Mark Strand
On the eve of my fortieth birthday
I sat on the porch having a smoke
when out of the blue a man and a camel
happened by. Neither uttered a sound
at first, but as they drifted up the street
and out of town the two of them began to sing.
Yet what they sang is still a mystery to me—
the words were indistinct and the tune
too ornamental to recall. Into the desert
they went and as they went their voices
rose as one above the sifting sound
of windblown sand. The wonder of their singing,
its elusive blend of man and camel, seemed
an ideal image for all uncommon couples.
Was this the night that I had waited for
so long? I wanted to believe it was,
but just as they were vanishing, the man
and camel ceased to sing, and galloped
back to town. They stood before my porch,
staring up at me with beady eyes, and said:
"You ruined it. You ruined it forever."
- Hitting repeat.
- Adding, I've been offering pint bets on Obama's reelection since I digitally collected pint bets on his victory over John McCain's corpse. I offer 3-1, no, 4-1! odds on Obama's winning this November. Obama wins, as I used to gleefully cackle, by pissing off motherfucking crackers to their storm-cellared souls so foundationally their motherfucking cracker reactions scare the reasonable fuck out of anyone who is not a motherfucking cracker. It's Obama's campaign strategy this election. I bet 4-1 pints it works again.
- Tribalism.
- She who is as shitty approves of Santorum using his sick daughter as prop for what Santorum considers an honorable withdrawal. Man of his imaginary friend Jesus, that Santorum.
- On luck of the draw and complicity.
- On instant and ever-present communication.
- Olney! Having driven through Olney countless times, I can't verify it exists.
- Speaking of towns that don't exist, Stringtown is deader than its usual dead-self, hence the sparse links.
- I have toxoplasmosis.
- Waiting for Wotan, the never-ending gag.
- More rhetorical devices.
- Mark Strand is seventy-eight today. He used to be held in far more reverence than he seems to be today as far as I can tell, and, as someone who used to read Strand often, it hasn't aged particularly well, though....

From This Fat Dungeon I Could Rise to Skin and Human Title, Putting Pig Within
So, Ozzie Guillen and Fidel Castro. I've decided against the chronicling via blooger gadget the day-by-day shitstorms because hearing each day's new cover of the same song doesn't make that anthem suck any less or any more. I won't get fooled again, which is worse since I will unreservedly and unexaminedly still love my sucky anthems as much as I loathe others over and over again day after day. Since I need write this publicly to purge it from my head: I need insult me to get past insulting you for sins we share, sin a lead word. I'm plumbed. That sentence was extinct as I wrote it, fresh as a b/w photo post-colorization.
MOLY
Thom Gunn
Nightmare of beasthood, snorting, how to wake.
I woke. What beasthood skin she made me take?
Leathery toad that ruts for days on end,
Or cringing dribbling dog, man’s servile friend,
Or cat that prettily pounces on its meat,
Tortures it hours, then does not care to eat:
Parrot, moth, shark, wolf, crocodile, ass, flea.
What germs, what jostling mobs there were in me.
These seem like bristles, and the hide is tough.
No claw or web here: each foot ends in hoof.
Into what bulk has method disappeared?
Like ham, streaked. I am gross—grey, gross, flap-eared.
The pale-lashed eyes my only human feature.
My teeth tear, tear. I am the snouted creature
That bites through anything, root, wire, or can.
If I was not afraid I’d eat a man.
Oh a man’s flesh already is in mine.
Hand and foot poised for risk. Buried in swine.
I root and root, you think that it is greed,
It is, but I seek out a plant I need.
Direct me gods, whose changes are all holy,
To where it flickers deep in grass, the moly:
Cool flesh of magic in each leaf and shoot,
From milky flower to the black forked root.
From this fat dungeon I could rise to skin
And human title, putting pig within.
I push my big grey wet snout through the green,
Dreaming the flower I have never seen.

After all, the capitalist economy, as the foundation of modern liberal societies, has shown itself to be not only exceptionally adaptable and crisis-resistant, but also, in every phase of its dominance, capable of producing the scientific and technological wherewithal to analyse and mitigate the self-generated "malfunctioning" to which its constituent subjects are prone. In doing so – and this too is one of capitalism's algorithms – it involves them in the inexorably effective cycle of supply and demand.

Wait, Mood, Gone
Also too, a 13 year old writes Sonic Youth:
I'm going to be 100% honest with you. I'm 13, I have a little band. We are so much better than you. You are the worst band I have ever seen in your entire life. You are worse than Rebecca Black. The bass player just hacks the bass and plays one chord. The guitar players are playing out of tune guitars and... well, not even playing actual chords. I couldn't sound worse if I even tried. It actually sounds like a joke to me. The drummer is OK. But honestly, the vocalist is completely out of tune. Oh, and the Black keys have only two people and are better than you.
From: me, and pretty much everybody else who has stumbled upon your terrible music.
Which reminds me of this gag I wrote, of sorts, three years ago:
Max Boot and K-Punk, who the fuck? three years, three decades. Exactly one week ago this post's timestamp I was buying gas in Hockingport Ohio, jeebus. The Carpenters played out of the loudspeakers above the pumps.

IN MICHAEL ROBIN'S CLASS MINUS ONE
Bill Hicok
At the desk where the boy sat, he sees the Chicago River.
It raises its hand.
It asks if metaphor should burn.
He says fire is the basis for all forms of the mouth.
He asks, why did you fill the boy with your going?
I didn't know a boy had been added to me, the river says.
Would you have given him back if you knew?
I think so, the river says, I have so many boys in me,
I'm worn out stroking eyes looking up at the day.
Have you written a poem for us? he asks the river,
and the river reads its poem,
and the other students tell the river
it sounds like a poem the boy would have written,
that they smell the boy's cigarettes
in the poem, they feel his teeth
biting the page.
And the river asks, did this boy dream of horses?
because I suddenly dream of horses, I suddenly dream.
They're in a circle and the river says, I've never understood
round things, why would leaving come back
to itself?
And a girl makes a kiss with her mouth and leans it
against the river, and the kiss flows away
but the river wants it back, the river makes sounds
to go after the kiss.
And they all make sounds for the river to carry to the boy.
And the river promises to never surrender the boy's shape
to the ocean.

The Venial Sin: Being Exceptional
Shot minutes ago, sums up American exceptionalism yes? Also too, also too, also too, also too. And here, something fun because I love you. I'm off to here, soon:
STET STET STET
Ange Mlinko
Where the curve of the road rhymes with the reservoir's
and cleared of the leafy veils that for six months
obscured it,
the landscape's wet chestnut
in the gray descended cloud
intones You're lucky to live in a watershed
so no vast tracts of tacky drywall
turn the land into peremptory enclosures.
You've bought in.
The venial sin:
being exceptional.
Reading Hölderlin.
And the natural hallucinogen of joy
helium-cum-oxygen
leaving wordy outputs
hanging on piney tenterhooks
while all the wild protected liminal woods
contrive a blind.

United 0, Seattle 0
From his secret bunker in central Pennsyltucky Fullback confirms those were two direct hits to the balls of two different Seattle players, the first off which, which I saw directly, was a vicious and deliberate stomp and rake by De Rossario that would have got him red-carded if the ref had seen it. Fuck Seattle and all, but get yourself thrown out of this game and suspended the next, dumb motherfucker?
Dear St Benny of Olsen, you've got to start Boskovic (or anyone other than De Rossario) in attacking central midfield, move De Rossario to withdrawn forward, and bench either Maicon Santo or the Albanian Spatula because you're wasting De Rossario in attacking midfield. Here's what Seattle did - they put two on DeLeon, two on De Rossario (one like glue) and bet United couldn't service their forwards and.... United couldn't service their forwards. Boskovic (yes, I'm silly for Boskovic, but United's invested the money, make him pay off or not) at least creates the defensive need to mark three people.
Also, Kitchen - thank goodness the U-23 USMNT crashed out of the motherfuckingly stupidass Olympics, because - yes, I know it's a new position at defensive mid - who knows how much further Kitchen's development would have been stunted on the back-line under Caleb Porter. Right now: he's the broken link between the back and the wings, attacking mid.
But Seattle's better - bigger, faster, smoother, better organized, better coached - so a draw shouldn't feel like both a defeat (the Albanian Spatula gacking a sitter) and a victory (Marc Fucking Burch's blind header off the cross-bar at 9230). Speaking of Marc Fucking Burch
that's this guy in a Burch shirt last night, giving us one more chance to argue Burch is useful versus useless. It's fun!) Here are highlights (of the game, not the argument). Here's AMT, here's Floyd of Ives. More later if and when.

As Absolutely Devoid of Meaning as a French Horn
So now the firestorm is what some fuck at National Review typed re: white parental advice to their children re: niggers, and jesus fucking christ this is gonna be the shittiest summer ever since the last until the next. I've thought about creating a gadget box to track the worst media or bleggal firestorm ever since the last until the next, and Hey! Did you know Washington DC has a professional soccer team?
- It's true! and they're giving away that shirt tonight and I want. They play tonight at home against the shittiest kits in professional soccer, the shittiest kits EVER! Shiityest also too.
- Marc Burch takes every free kick, or dummies at the least, and scores one, does a Tino to LOUD SIDE! Pint bet? (You must be present to win this prize.)
- Line-up issues. Najar doesn't start, doesn't play unless o-shit? Pontius and DeLeon - which does Benny start on the right?
- Happy Easter!
- The running of the schadenfreude.
- Your fucking Washington Post.

- Jump fraud.

IMPROVISATIONS ON A SENTENCE BY POE
Jack Spicer
"Indefiniteness is an element of the true music."
The grand concord of what
Does not stoop to definition. The seagull
Alone on the pier cawing its head off
Over no fish, no other seagull,
No ocean. As absolutely devoid of meaning
As a French horn.
It is not even an orchestra. Concord
Alone on a pier. The grand concord of what
Does not stoop to definition. No fish
No other seagull, no ocean—the true
Music.

Born Eighty-One Years Ago Saturday
THE SCHOOL
Donald Barthelme
Donald Barthelme
It wouldn’t have been so bad except that just a couple of weeks before the thing with the trees, the snakes all died. But I think that the snakes – well, the reason that the snakes kicked off was that ... you remember, the boiler was shut off for four days because of the strike, and that was explicable. It was something you could explain to the kids because of the strike. I mean, none of their parents would let them cross the picket line and they knew there was a strike going on and what it meant. So when things got started up again and we found the snakes they weren’t too disturbed.
With the herb gardens it was probably a case of overwatering, and at least now they know not to overwater. The children were very conscientious with the herb gardens and some of them probably ... you know, slipped them a little extra water when we weren’t looking. Or maybe ... well, I don’t like to think about sabotage, although it did occur to us. I mean, it was something that crossed our minds. We were thinking that way probably because before that the gerbils had died, and the white mice had died, and the salamander ... well, now they know not to carry them around in plastic bags.
Of course we expected the tropical fish to die, that was no surprise. Those numbers, you look at them crooked and they’re belly-up on the surface. But the lesson plan called for a tropical fish input at that point, there was nothing we could do, it happens every year, you just have to hurry past it.
We weren’t even supposed to have a puppy.
We weren’t even supposed to have one, it was just a puppy the Murdoch girl found under a Gristede’s truck one day and she was afraid the truck would run over it when the driver had finished making his delivery, so she stuck it in her knapsack and brought it to the school with her. So we had this puppy. As soon as I saw the puppy I thought, Oh Christ, I bet it will live for about two weeks and then... And that’s what it did. It wasn’t supposed to be in the classroom at all, there’s some kind of regulation about it, but you can’t tell them they can’t have a puppy when the puppy is already there, right in front of them, running around on the floor and yap yap yapping. They named it Edgar – that is, they named it after me. They had a lot of fun running after it and yelling, “Here, Edgar! Nice Edgar!” Then they’d laugh like hell. They enjoyed the ambiguity. I enjoyed it myself. I don’t mind being kidded. They made a little house for it in the supply closet and all that. I don’t know what it died of. Distemper, I guess. It probably hadn’t had any shots. I got it out of there before the kids got to school. I checked the supply closet each morning, routinely, because I knew what was going to happen. I gave it to the custodian.
And then there was this Korean orphan that the class adopted through the Help the Children program, all the kids brought in a quarter a month, that was the idea. It was an unfortunate thing, the kid’s name was Kim and maybe we adopted him too late or something. The cause of death was not stated in the letter we got, they suggested we adopt another child instead and sent us some interesting case histories, but we didn’t have the heart. The class took it pretty hard, they began (I think, nobody ever said anything to me directly) to feel that maybe there was something wrong with the school. But I don’t think there’s anything wrong with the school, particularly, I’ve seen better and I’ve seen worse. It was just a run of bad luck. We had an extraordinary number of parents passing away, for instance. There were I think two heart attacks and two suicides, one drowning, and four killed together in a car accident. One stroke. And we had the usual heavy mortality rate among the grandparents, or maybe it was heavier this year, it seemed so. And finally the tragedy.
The tragedy occurred when Matthew Wein and Tony Mavrogordo were playing over where they’re excavating for the new federal office building. There were all these big wooden beams stacked, you know, at the edge of the excavation. There’s a court case coming out of that, the parents are claiming that the beams were poorly stacked. I don’t know what’s true and what’s not. It’s been a strange year.
I forgot to mention Billy Brandt’s father who was knifed fatally when he grappled with a masked intruder in his home.
One day, we had a discussion in class. They asked me, where did they go? The trees, the salamander, the tropical fish, Edgar, the poppas and mommas, Matthew and Tony, where did they go? And I said, I don’t know, I don’t know. And they said, who knows? and I said, nobody knows. And they said, is death that which gives meaning to life? And I said no, life is that which gives meaning to life. Then they said, but isn’t death, considered as a fundamental datum, the means by which the taken-for-granted mundanity of the everyday may be transcended in the direction of –
I said, yes, maybe.
They said, we don’t like it.
I said, that’s sound.
They said, it’s a bloody shame!
I said, it is.
They said, will you make love now with Helen (our teaching assistant) so that we can see how it is done? We know you like Helen.
I do like Helen but I said that I would not.
We’ve heard so much about it, they said, but we’ve never seen it.
I said I would be fired and that it was never, or almost never, done as a demonstration. Helen looked out the window.
They said, please, please make love with Helen, we require an assertion of value, we are frightened.
I said that they shouldn’t be frightened (although I am often frightened) and that there was value everywhere. Helen came and embraced me. I kissed her a few times on the brow. We held each other. The children were excited. Then there was a knock on the door, I opened the door, and the new gerbil walked in. The children cheered wildly.

Keep the Mannequin Secrets to Yourself
I had a girlfriend back in my early 20s who claimed she'd chained herself to virgin forest tree trunks in Oregon, I said at Thursday Night Pints, two of those there who'd heard this story before, just like you long-timers here, one who hadn't. Not the tug-of-war trope again, said D. Again, said L. K had asked me why I still enjoy raking myself with politics if I think all teams collude to advance the league and I think any given moment is as good as humans as animals can be. The tug-of-war, I said to K, those on the ends tug for millimeters in the middle, without those tugs those millimeters would be lost, and slope and new starting lines and stuff. The silence of an and. K got up to buy a round, it was about the fuck time, hugs and kisses. You didn't answer the question, said L. There was a question? I asked.

The Very Flatness of Portrait Makes for Nostalgia in the Connoisseur
Actually Rick Santorum's name did come up that Monday morning in the Zanesville HIE's breakfast lounge, and yes, the reaction, out of a dozen people not me, was more mixed than the group-panning of both Mitt Obama (mittobama - trademark!) and Barack Romney. None were - or pronounced him or herself as - a Santorum zealot, though more than half said they voted for him for the cultural war reasons for which we measure them so contemptuously. One fireman said, Santorum has zero chance of ever being president, he's too honorable to be electable, even within the Republican Party. A Mary Kay representative said, too bad, he'd be a great president. No he wouldn't, said another Mary Kay representative, he'd be another Jimmy Carter.
Yeah, that was easy, but it's a great song plus I truly didn't do proper by Richard Thompson's birthday, so songs today. I've read Romney's new spearhead is Obama being caught on mic promising he doesn't give a flying fuck about public opinion beyond the necessary winking bullshit needed to get reelected, wait until after the election when we Corporate assholes can operate as the Corporate assholes we are, Romney's attack so perfectly apt and correct and prismatically ironic I hope it fucking works from now until November since it will be true next January no matter which Corporate asshole is elected.

I am thinking about what to read next, which I interpret as both a good sign and a desperate sign.

Next Six Hours: 146 to 70 to 470 to 70 to 79 to 68 to 70 to 270 to 355 to U-Turn at the Second Light
That's at a gas station in New Concord Ohio midway through our last day of driving on eastern Ohio two-lane highways yesterday. I prefer to think of the second word as an adjective rather than a noun, but I'm a self-centered ass. We're driving home early, a few minutes and cups of coffee after I post this (and it's all I had in me late last night), so photos, mostly, though I do want to note the newest addition to Me and Mine. Here's my birding station:
The above two and one below shot at The Wilds, a private wildlife preserve south of I-70, southeast of Zanesville. (It had nothing to do with the wild animal escape this past summer near Zanesville - that was twenty miles west of The Wilds.) I confess I know next to nothing about other it than I'd seen the signs on I-70 each previous trip to and from Bamgier and we inadvertently, if happily, stumbled upon it exploring this trip. Though closed - it's open in the summer - we drove on public roads through parts of it - it looks like savannah grasslands, and signs at the birding station said they burned and cut undergrowth to maintain grassland for hawks, ospreys, owls, and other birds.
The remaining are from Planet's school, the revamped and brightened but still essentially 1970s brutalist library (they are everywhere) and excellent art gallery. Regular programming returns tomorrow, or not.
Your Eyes Green Even Though Your Driver's License Says Otherwise
One can't help overhearing the conversations in the breakfast lounges of Holiday Inn Expresses. There's both a Mary Kay mini-convention and a fire equipment mini-convention currently at the one in Zanesville, the lounge is filled with Mary Kay saleswomen with full Mary Kay hair and make-up, mostly crew-cut men in their respective districts lettermen's jackets and sweatshirts. The giant flat-screen above the gas fireplace is set to Fox News. I'm often, and rightfully, accused of holding Middle Americans in snide contempt as right-wing know-nothings, and when Fox News first flashes to an anti-Obama story and everyone in the room groans in loathing for Obama soft waves of familiar uh-huh ripple over me, but then Fox News follows up with a story about Romney, everyone in the room groans with contempt for the Stiff One. A firefighter says, too loudly, to his table mates, fuck them both, there's not a shit's worth of difference, quickly realizes he spoke too loud, turns to an adjacent table full of Mary Kay representatives, and apologizes for his language. All four Mary Kay representatives laugh, one louder than the others, who then says, they're all lying, self-serving fuckers. All laugh.

You know the litany: “Corporations are people, my friend.” “I’m not concerned about the very poor.” “I like being able to fire people who provide services to me.” “Ann (Romney) drives a couple of Cadillacs.”
- Quite a self-serving and disingenuous statement of Robinson's fear, yes? since he will be cashing a paycheck reminding you of that impression on a weekly basis through the first week in November.

HOW TO BE A SURREALIST
Dean Young
Sleep well. A gland in the command
center releases its yellow hornet
to tell you you're missing the point,
the point being that getting smacked
by a board, gored by umbrellas, tongue-
lashed by cardiologists, bush-wacked
by push-up bras is a learning experience.
Sure, you're about learned up. Weren't
we promised the thieves would be punished?
Promised jet-packs and fleshy gardenias
and wine to get the dust out of our mouths?
And endless forgiveness? A floral rot
comes out of the closet, the old teacher's
voice comes out of the ravine, red-wings
in rushes never forget their rusty-hinged
song. Moon-song, dread-song, hardly-a-song
at all song. Let's ignore that call,
let someone else stop Mary from herself
for the 80th time. It's never really dark
anyway, not even inside the skull. Take
my hand, fellow figment. Every spring
we'll meet, definite as swarms of stars,
insects over glazed puddles, your eyes
green even though your driver's license
says otherwise. And yes, mortal knells
in sleepless hours, hollow knocks of empty
boats against a dock but still the mind
is a meadow, the heart an ocean even though
it burns. As long as there's a sky, someone
will be falling from it. After molting,
eat your own shucked skin for strength,
keep changing the subject in hopes
that the subject will change you.

60 to 78 to 13 to 50 to 144 to 124 to 50 to 339 to 60 to 83 to 78 to 284 to 146
Saw two lock and dams, the one above on the Muskingum south of Zanesville near McConnellsville, another gigantic (and remarkably unphotogenic and sadly bargeless) one on the Ohio at Reedsville, near Forked Run State Park. The fourteen miles of Ohio 78 between McConnellsville and Glouster is as pretty a road I've driven since California 128 four years ago on another vacation and another blog. I'll post more photos tomorrow. Glouster, however,
a quick left on Ohio 13 after 78 dead-ends into it, is as depressed and dilapidated a dying grandpa town as I've ever seen (and I'm from the Mon Valley, from Fayette County dead company coal towns, I've seen dying grandpa towns), four wheel-chaired vets smoking cigarettes (two with oxygen-tubes) in front of the plywood-windowed and No Trespassing stenciled abandoned VFW. Two miles of road, from gorgeous Spring to decayed Fall.
Lunch in Athens, on the main drag of Ohio University. I work in academia, I work in a library, two years ago this time we'd started our college tours with Planet, I like to visit colleges and universities, I like to visit their libraries. Ohio University is pretty, the library is yet another (they are EVERYWHERE) 1970s brutalist academic library. Low-ceilinged, atrium-repressed. Earthgirl asked me what I knew about Ohio University, is it considered better than Ohio State or visa versa, hey, anyone from Ohio read this shitty blog that can answer that please? All I'd ever heard is that it's major Greek, and to judge from the endless blocks of frats and sororities heading out of town, probably true.
That's my bird on twelve at Forked Run, one of only five of twenty-four holes worth playing, the only five I played, up one side of a wooded hill, down the other. All other holes open-field hurls. Not much of interest potential-painting for Earthgirl either, though a pretty drive to and from, and this sign exiting the park, should we have wanted to choose a church. More tomorrow, or not.

Croon Self-Lullabies
For those of you tuning in for the first time in a few days, I'm typing this in the breakfast lounge of the Holiday Inn Express in Zanesville Ohio. It's Earthgirl's Spring Break, we drove out to Bamgier to visit Planet this past Saturday and Sunday. Today we're taking scenic routes down through Athens (to see for what the fuck) then on to Forked Run State Park - Earthgirl will take photos and draw for future potential paintings, I'm gonna throw plastic at metal, 24 holes. We'll then take an alternative scenic route back to Zanesville. We get to see Planet one more time Tuesday before we drive home Wednesday. Only perhaps a tenth of the people who regularly read give a flying fuck about these posts on my indulging my comfortable and not-regretted one fucking bit complicity, and oh the fuck well, they are my favorite posts.
Those two above photos are from the clay-throwing house at Bamgier, the bridge below some of you may recognize from Earthgirl's painting, it's the railroad bridge over the Muskingum River in Zanesville, the photo below is also in Zanesville, a real Sinclair sign, one I hadn't seen in at least three decades; it whacked by nostalgia nerve. Still, I'm such an attention slut and blogwhore, I can't avoid engaging the clusterfuck too, have some links, in no particular order than the order in which I find them, with the exception of the first: The most important thing you'll read today. Thinking out loud about race. A quantum theory of Mitt Romney. What does civilian control of the military mean in a demotic age? Occupy accessibility. On the Matt Bai piece. Conservative bullying. The day moves along. Incoming books. The open road and the traffic stop. If you meet a man on the road, castrate him. Fake.
AT THE EXECUTED MURDERER'S GRAVE
James Wright
1
My name is James A. Wright, and I was born
Twenty-five miles from this infected grave,
In Martins Ferry, Ohio, where one slave
To Hazel-Atlas Glass became my father.
He tried to teach me kindness. I return
Only in memory now, aloof, unhurried,
To dead Ohio, where I might lie buried,
Had I not run away before my time.
Ohio caught George Doty. Clean as lime,
His skull rots empty here. Dying’s the best
Of all the arts men learn in a dead place.
I walked here once. I made my loud display,
Leaning for language on a dead man’s voice.
Now sick of lies, I turn to face the past.
I add my easy grievance to the rest:
2
Doty, if I confess I do not love you,
Will you let me alone? I burn for my own lies.
The nights electrocute my fugitive,
My mind. I run like the bewildered mad
At St. Clair Sanitarium, who lurk,
Arch and cunning, under the maple trees,
Pleased to be playing guilty after dark.
Staring to bed, they croon self-lullabies.
Doty, you make me sick. I am not dead.
I croon my tears at fifty cents per line.
3
Idiot, he demanded love from girls,
And murdered one. Also, he was a thief.
He left two women, and a ghost with child.
The hair, foul as a dog’s upon his head,
Made such revolting Ohio animals
Fitter for vomit than a kind man’s grief.
I waste no pity on the dead that stink,
And no love’s lost between me and the crying
Drunks of Belaire, Ohio, where police
Kick at their kidneys till they die of drink.
Christ may restore them whole, for all of me.
Alive and dead, those giggling muckers who
Saddled my nightmares thirty years ago
Can do without my widely printed sighing
Over their pains with paid sincerity.
I do not pity the dead, I pity the dying.
4
I pity myself, because a man is dead.
If Belmont County killed him, what of me?
His victims never loved him. Why should we?
And yet, nobody had to kill him either.
It does no good to woo the grass, to veil
The quicklime hole of a man’s defeat and shame.
Nature-lovers are gone. To hell with them.
I kick the clods away, and speak my name.
5
This grave’s gash festers. Maybe it will heal,
When all are caught with what they had to do
In fear of love, when every man stands still
By the last sea,
And the princes of the sea come down
To lay away their robes, to judge the earth
And its dead, and we dead stand undefended everywhere,
And my bodies—father and child and unskilled criminal—
Ridiculously kneel to bare my scars,
My sneaking crimes, to God’s unpitying stars.
6
Staring politely, they will not mark my face
From any murderer’s, buried in this place.
Why should they? We are nothing but a man.
7
Doty, the rapist and the murderer,
Sleeps in a ditch of fire, and cannot hear;
And where, in earth or hell’s unholy peace,
Men’s suicides will stop, God knows, not I.
Angels and pebbles mock me under trees.
Earth is a door I cannot even face.
Order be damned, I do not want to die,
Even to keep Belaire, Ohio, safe.
The hackles on my neck are fear, not grief.
(Open, dungeon! Open, roof of the ground!)
I hear the last sea in the Ohio grass,
Heaving a tide of gray disastrousness.
Wrinkles of winter ditch the rotted face
Of Doty, killer, imbecile, and thief:
Dirt of my flesh, defeated, underground.
